lies deep within the dense valley bushveld of the Sundays River region of the Eastern Cape.
The Addo Elephant Park, Eastern Cape, South Africa is situated in a malaria free area just one hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth,
Addo Elephant Park is sanctuary to over 350 elephants, Cape buffalo,
a variety of antelope species, as well as the unique flightless dung beetle,
found almost exclusively in Addo.
Addo’s birding opportunity covers excellent habitat contrast between dense thickets of Spekboom interspersed with open grassy areas and wooded kloofs
(particularly in the Zuurberg region).
The expansion of the Park to include Darlington Lake, Woody Cape,
the coastal islands and the Alexandria Forest, a variety of additional habitats
has swelled the potential of the park.
The Park offers much to the visitor. Some of the roads, although a small percentage, are tarred.
However, the roads generally are in a reasonably good condition.
It is pleasing that within such a relatively short distance from Port Elizabeth,
a Nature Reserve offering such a variety of game viewing, and outdoor activities is there for all to enjoy.
ACCOMMODATION
All the cottages and chalets are close to the main waterhole which is illuminated at night. Thus giving one the opportunity to enjoy a memorable evening and a glimpse of the real nightlife in Africa.
There are also chalets catering for families, which can sleep either 2 adults,
and 2 children, or 3 adults. Each unit has 2 single beds. a double sleeper couch, full bathroom – bath and shower. A fully equipped kitchen and air conditioning.
Rondavels
These huts have two single beds, shower, toilet, hand basin, fridge and air conditioning. A communal kitchen which is fully equipped.
Forest cabins…..
consisting of an open plan area with four beds, and a table seating four. Each cabin has a shower, toilet and basin, as well as a fridge, braai (barbeque) facilities. All the rest camp accommodation is serviced daily and provided with bedding, towels and soap.
Narina Bush Camp…..located in the Zuurberg section of the Park is a beautiful section of the Addo Park .This section has been set aside as a wilderness area with very little human activity.
Only tents are available.
The bush camp overlooks the crystal clear natural pools of the Wit River
(translated: White River). The camp is very rustic, accommodating eight people at any one time. Needs are catered for but in a primitive sort of fashion.Four dome tents are provided with linen.No food or drinks are provided.Firewood is available for campfires at night.Also provided are paraffin lanters for overnight use.
The camp can be viewed from your own vehicle, or by guided tours in an open vehicle…..by day, at sunset, or by night, which is the ideal time to see black rhino and buffalo.
Hiking in the company of a guide in the heart of elephant country
is something to be considered.
Guided Rhino expeditions.
Guided rhino tours in the company of an experienced guide are also available.
Discovery trail.This specially designed and unique 2 km trail through typical thicket is suitable for disabled visitors in wheel chairs.
Zuurberg nature trails (1 and 4 hours)… that wind through deep kloofs of unspoiled indigenous forest and fynbos, and is home to leopard, bushpig,
and a wide variety of birds.
Horse Trails.Morning 2-hour guided horse rides for the less experienced rider. In the afternoon there is a 3-hour guided ride for experienced riders.
Zuurberg mountain horse trails.One hour trail for inexperienced riders, and 3 – 5 hours for more experienced riders.
There is a lapa which is used for spitbraais and potjies.
(potjie is broadly speaking comparable to a hunters stew)
(Spitbraai is preparing a whole carcass over an open pit with glowing coals).
There is a privately-run, licensed a la carte restaurant and shop in the restcamp.
Gate Hours: 07:00 – 19:00 throughout the year.
